Midway airport in Chicago is our closest airport and the main hub for Southwest Airlines. There is a shuttle service that runs all day long from Midway airport to the Kankakee, Illinois area, and then back again. It only cost $2 to ride. It’s called the River Valley Metro. Here is a Link to the Schedule.
Once you get to the shuttle’s hub in Kankakee, we can personally pick you up and bring you to Stelle for $80. If there are additional students arriving at the same time, we will divide up the $80 cost equally.
Getting Off the Flight: Once you arrive at Midway, and gather up your bags, the River Valley Metro pick-up point is through Door 6 located at the far end of the baggage claim area. Just a short walking distance through those doors and you arrive at ‘Regional Buses’. Hop on the River Metro bus and once you arrive in Kankakee/Bourbonnais we’ll have someone pick you up and transport you to Stelle for $80. Make sense?
Bottom-line?
If you are attending this extended weekend training and traveling via public transit, we’ll help you get here to the Home of Midwest Permaculture. To set up our end of the shuttle you’ll need to let Milton know way ahead of time and then keep in touch via text once you land at Midway.
What About Your Return Trip?
(Don’t book flights out of Midway before 4:00p.m. on Sunday.)
Just reverse the above but this time there will probably be more than one student heading back to the metro terminal in Kankakee, so again, the price of transport is divided equally. ($40-each for two. $27 if three. $20-each if 4 of you.)
Please Note: The training ends around noon and includes a departing lunch. If we shuttle everyone out of Stelle by 12:30, that puts us in Kankakee just after 1:00pm for the 1:20 departure back up to Midway. Arrival there is supposed to be 2:35. Allowing an hour+ for any delays and for getting through security, this mean the earliest return flight you’ll want to book out of Midway is around 4:00pm.
We can also arrange a second trip from Stelle at 3:10 to the Kankakee shuttle for the 4:05 departure from Kankakee and arrival to Midway at 5:20.
What about O’Hare Airport?
Does your best flight deal land you at Chicago’s O’Hare field? While the $2 shuttle does not offer service to O’Hare, it is relatively easy to get to Midway from O’Hare by using the CTA’s public rail transportation. This adds to your travel time (allow two hours) but at a cost of $5-$10 for a day pass it might be worth it.
“L” Trains from O’Hare to Midway
At O’Hare you board The Blue Line train and ride it to the Clark/Lake Station. There you switch on to The Orange Line which brings you directly to Midway. Locate the ‘Regional Buses’ area and board the River Valley Metro shuttle. It brings you to Kankakee/Bourbonnais and boom – we’ve got ya from there!

What about the Union Station in Chicago?
The lowest carbon footprint (besides walking and biking) is to travel by bus or train. If a bus or train takes you to the Union Station in Chicago then ride the $3 CTA Orange Line to Midway airport to pick up the $2 Metro shuttle to us. Other Cities Along the Line
If the bus or train line you are taking runs through either Kankakee/Bourbonnais, Pontiac or Dwight, we can make arrangements to pick you up from these cities as well.
When to Arrive for a Training?
We officially open site registration at 2pm on Thursday at the community center and begin our first session at 4:00pm, there as well. Try to arrive with some extra time to relax. If you arrive earlier that 2pm, you are welcome to walk around, take a nap, swim in the pool, visit with other students or just relax in our small library.
